2011 - 2012 Famine relief project
for the village of Xusaane (Khoussané), Mali, West Africa
Xusaane is a village of 7000 people, most of who are from the Soninke ethnic group. As with all the Soninke of the world, their principal occupation is agriculture. Following farming is emigration to look for work in foreign countries. This year the harvest in Xusaane is negligible, due to a lack of adequate rainfall.
In this situation, the benefits derived from emigration provide the only fallback resource that can save a family from the consequences of the current famine in Soninkeland. However, the reality is that about one-third of the population of Xusaane has no emigrants in their families to help them: these families need serious help feeding themselves this year.
It is for this reason that we, people of faith in Xusaane and the village association Soobe Fedde, have put together a 7-member committee whose goal it is to seek a solution to the food crisis of 2011-2012, until the harvest of 2012-2013 can give us relief.
